Oral Presentation 2 Reflection

There are 3 general criteria I used to judge my performance in oral presentation 2. It is confidence, knowledge and persuasion. This will be the standard used to determine if I have succeeded in being a good presenter and a convincing persuader.
There are 3 general criteria I used to judge my performance in oral presentation 2. It is confidence, knowledge and persuasion. This will be the standard used to determine if I have succeeded in being a good presenter and a convincing persuader.
I maintained longer and more comfortable eye contact compared to my previous presentation and this helped me engage the audience thus aiding the presentation’s objective of raising awareness.
Initially, the pace was erratic with hesitation. It made me appear nervous and without confidence. Thankfully, the situation improved as I regained more confidence along with the presentation flow. More rehearsals with a focus on the beginning could solve the problem.
I had good knowledge of the problem and solution and used them to my advantage. In fact, I hardly referred to the flash cards. This instead became a problem because the flash cards, when gestured about, became a distraction. I should trust myself without flash cards in future.
I was able to make proper gestures when stating a point. It would have been better if I made the gesture fit the emphasis. Some of the important statements should have been made with two-handed gestures to show the relative importance.
I stated the proposal’s effectiveness. However, I could have made the presentation more convincing by showing how the proposal can be effective. This will help greatly in the successful persuasion of the target audience.
I attempted to make some points conceivable by providing simple examples. This gives the audience a very clear picture of the problem and proposal. Future improvements would be to use examples which relate to the audience more relevantly thus engaging them effectively.
I felt that my team did a good presentation especially with the concept of having segmented speaking roles. This showed the audience that every team member was confident and knowledgeable in the subject. The disadvantage was with the difficult transitions, which we overcame with rehearsals. More rehearsals will certainly see a better flow in future presentations.

Hi Junius,
ReplyDeleteI am very impressed of your design this post. It is very nice and creative. For your performance in the OP2, I think you achieved most of the things listed in the criteria.
Being well-prepared for the presentation, you can speak confidently and make good use of the gestures as well as maintain the eye contact with the audiences. I did not see the hesitation you mentioned above. It is better if you could speak without having the flash cards. You would impress everyone by the confidence and enthusiasm.
As a team, you did very well on the whole. The content was technical but delivered clearly. Moreover, transition between speakers was very smooth. The only thing I think your team should care about is the time management. It is an important aspect of the presentation.

Khoa
Hi Junius,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a good performance from you this time round. You have always portrayed this image of being a shy and reserved young man, but how wrong was I. Through the presentation, I was particularly impressed by your confidence and eloquence. You hardly stuttered, and that made your speech extra convincing, extra refreshing. In addition, your team’s PowerPoint slides were excellent. I love the design template; also, important points were repeatedly emphasized to further instil the gravity and seriousness of antibiotics abuse. Your team undoubtedly, made excellent use of visual aids during the presentation.
However, I apologize if I disagree with your team’s choice of delivery. Having to switch speakers so frequently during the presentation made it slightly disorganized. This was especially evident at the start where your team looked unsure of who was going next. I noticed that when a speaker was speaking, the others were busy practising (mouthing) their parts of their speech. This does not reflect well on the team as it shows a lack of confidence. Also, during the question and answer session, it seemed like only two out of four of the members answer the questions. One member in particular, dominated the Q&A session (could be due to time constraints). I personally feel that team members should have equal chance to contribute and answer questions; this is something you can look into (even though you are not the leader).
All in all, a very good individual performance from you! Team performance on the other hand, could be improved! All the best for your oral defence :)
Regards,
Justin
Hi Junius,
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job in this presentation. Your ideas were put across to the audience, and indeed, you have achieved most of your criteria in your presentation.
However, I feel that your group did not dress as a group. Perhaps your group should standardize the type of clothes to wear. (Maybe long sleeved shirt, with pants not jeans, and leather shoes) This will make the group look better.
Also, time management is extremely important. I guess your group should have realized that the presentation will overrun during your practices, but your team did not change your scripts to meet the time requirements. I feel that you should cut down on the less important and repetitive parts of the presentation. I understand that your team did a lot of research, but there is no need to present everything.
On the whole, your group is good. The idea of changing speakers is good. But perhaps more practice would be needed to make the transitions between each speakers smoother. :)
Hey Junius,
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost, I am really impressed by the way you have organised your post. Its very appealing to the reader.
As an improvement, when you next come across an opportunity to speak in front of a live audience I suggest you avoid flashcards. Its always best to speak spontaneously. If you had in fact prepared well enough for your presentation there wouldn't have been any necessity of the flashcards.
Wishing you the very best for your performance during the oral defence,
Lakshmi
Hello Junius, my fellow teammate!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a presentation well done! Your delivery was superb and I totally agree with you that the cue cards was unnecessary.
However, as pointed out, we should have indeed cut down on some details and summarised them better. In that aspect, more can be done to improve.
This blog post is very refreshing and colorful. I liked how you have explicitly highlighted your criteria and showed your reflection on that point. Nice post. =)
Good luck for Oral Defense!
Yours sincerely,
Junhao Quek, C04E
Hi Khoa,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the encouraging words. I agree with you that time management is important for a presentation. This is especially so in this particular presentation because we have MOH delegates as audiences and we cannot afford to hold them up. I will see to it to ensure time management becomes an important criterion for future presentations.
Hi Justin,
Your opinion on the delivery method is very valuable. My team tried this method in hopes for a creative approach and I am eager to see the reception. You have clearly showed me the problem areas and I think I know how to improve on it. Perhaps in future, this method must see that the rotation occurs less frequently to avoid confusion. Also, the non-speaking members should sit to give the current speaker the attention he deserves.
Hi Jing Mei,
Thank you for pointing out the two main areas which clearly needed large improvements. Regarding time management, it was unfortunate that my team did not have enough time to shorten the script despite knowing we would overrun. As mentioned earlier, this will be a key aspect I will certainly look into. The dress code was another issue that could have been easily avoided. I admit that it was entirely my fault for not matching the formal attires of my other team mates. I will look into this matter with emphasis in future.
Hi Luckshme,
Your praises are highly appreciated. I will certainly do away with the cards in future. I realised having the flash cards in the first place already gave a bad impression to the audience, especially in this particular case where the audience is comprised of the general public. However, I must ensure that this will not jeopardise the presentation. That is to say, I have to make sure I fully comprehend the topic and memorise the key points well.
Hi Jun Hao,
The idea you suggested to shorten the presentation was good. I realised that there were many examples in our presentation though it was justified that the examples related well to the general public. When compared with other parts of the presentation, the examples were definitely the parts that carried lesser priority and importance and thus should be the first to get cut. We should have weighed the consequences of overrunning the presentation to missing out on the examples.
Lastly, I want to thank you all for the constructive feedback and valuable suggestions. I will keep in mind all the improvement areas and certainly put in effort to work on it.
